The Great Makers Exchange – a Creative Gathering
Saturday, August 18, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. (Workshops begin at 9 a.m.)

Ready, set, make! The American Swedish Institute invites you to a gathering for painters, crafters, carvers, weavers – and folks who just want to learn how make something! With fun and casual two-hour craft workshops in the morning (9 -11 a.m.) and afternoon (2 – 4 p.m.), beginners as well as craft enthusiasts have a chance to make something with their hands. Visit the Great Makers Exchange event page to see the full list of workshops and to register. Drop-in activities include a Young Makers Studio for youth and families, a Makers Market where you can buy what artists have made, on-site craft demonstrations, live music from local talent and the Featured Maker Talk.

Festival included with museum admission or Great Makers Exchange workshop registration.

Featured Maker Talk: Sustainable Textiles with Three Rivers Fibershed

1-2 p.m.
Join Three Rivers Fibershed to talk about sustainable fashion and share questions, inspiration and ideas for action. Walk through ASI’s new exhibition Gudrun Sjödén – A Colourful Universe, to learn how one globally successful designer has incorporated sustainable practices into her textile and clothing production.

Gudrun Sjödén – A Colourful Universe has transformed ASI into a whimsical world with bold colors and patterns in a visually striking collaboration with Swedish designer and global entrepreneur Gudrun Sjödén.

Curated Cocktail Tours

Experience the exhibition with curated cocktail and specialty lite-bites from FIKA in hand. This after-hours journey of the senses is inspired by Gudrun – her bold use of color, her eco-conscious approach and her global impact.

Space is limited. Open to ages 21+. Two tour dates available:
Thursday, September 6, 7-8:30 p.m. Register here.

Private Group Tours
Book a festive outing for your book club, friends, co-workers or family to tour the Gudrun exhibition with one of ASI’s knowledgeable guides. Group tours include a Sjödén-designed cloth bag and exhibition booklet. grouptours.

Upcycle Your Used Clothing!

Saturday, August 11 & Sunday, August 12
Finally, a creative way to put used clothing or fabric to work! Bring them to ASI’s new återbruk (recycling) container. On select weekends, designers led by Maddy Bartsch of Three Rivers Fibershed will “upcycle” (cut and sew) these items into bags that will be sold in the Museum Shop. A portion of proceeds will go to a local organization.

From Boho Bird shirts that are flying off the rack to socks, tea towels to T-shirts, the ASI Museum Store at the American Swedish Institute is the only place outside of New York (or online!) to purchase Gudrun Sjödén goods. We’re re-ordering items as quickly as possible, including a limited number of scarfs designed especially by Gudrun for this ASI exhibition.

Verne Anderson + Cecilia Schiller – Whimsy and Wonder

Exhibition on view August 11-September 16
Artist reception Wed., August 15, 6-7 p.m.

This remarkable exhibition features the engaging and whimsical work of two Twin Cities-based artists – Verne Anderson, printmaker and woodcarver, and Cecilia Schiller, who creates mechanical automata. Their careers intersect with three-dimensional sculpture, craft and art. The Artist Reception is included with museum admission.

It’s a morning play date! This month’s Kids at the Castle is inspired by the Great Makers Exchange and encourages curious young minds through crafts, storytelling, visual play, music and movement. Only $8 for the whole family. No registration required.

Kräftskiva – Crayfish Party

Helan går…”

Friday, August 24, 6:30 p.m.

Experience a kräftskiva, a Swedish summer tradition, during a magical evening in ASI’s courtyard. There’ll be party hats, lanterns, music, dancing and, of course, plenty of crayfish brined with dill and served with bread, cheese and other side dishes. Our hosts will show you how to eat the crayfish and lead drinking songs. Grab a bib and skål!
