Gudrun Sjödén – A Colourful Universe
Exhibition opens with First Look preview July 26, runs through Oct. 28

The American Swedish Institute‘s collaboration with renowned Swedish textile/fashion designer and entrepreneur Gudrun Sjödén celebrates her career and the bold collections that are inspired by nature, Swedish folk motifs and the world. This visually striking exhibition shares her original watercolors, archival catalogs and samples of her work, inspiring a forum for inspiration, knowledge and positive thinking. Gudrun’s style is sustainable, unique and designed for all women!
First Look Preview Party

Thursday, July 26, doors at 6:30 p.m., event 7-10 p.m.
Be one of the first to step inside Gudrun Sjödén’s colourful universe at this lively exhibition preview party. Hear about Gudrun’s work from her and the team and view a fashion show organized by Sarah Edwards accompanied by live music from Anonymous Choir. Indulge in specialty food and cocktails from FIKA, and beverages provided by Indeed Brewing and Tiny Footprint Coffee. The American Craft Council will be there with a pop-up library and fiber artist Maddy Bartsh sharing insight from Three Rivers Fibershed.

Tia Keo – Three Sixty Five

ASI’s Community Gallery Welcomes Local Artists

ASI continues the year of The Handmade with Three Sixty Five, an exhibition by Minnesota-based artist, creator and jewelry maker Tia Keo, on view through August 5. Over 365 days, Keo explored her creativity with watercolors/drawings and metal weaving.

Artist Reception Wednesday, August 15, 6-7 p.m.
Join us to honor artists Cecilia Schiller and Verne Anderson as part of their Whimsy and Wonder exhibition, on view at ASI from August 11-September 16. Their engaging and, yes, whimsical work intersects three-dimensional sculpture, craft and art.

To wind up or wind down, on Wednesday nights ASI is open until 8 p.m. and it’s a great time for all ages to visit! Check out the exhibitions, make some art of your own, do a little shopping, eat and drink – FIKA offers After Work Wednesdays drink specials!

Craft & Cocktails Series
Wednesdays, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Try your hand at Nordic crafts – with a cocktail or beverage of your choice in hand! No experience needed. Grab a friend and a refreshment from FIKA. It’s fun. It’s unique. It’s craft! Take what you make home. Register below.

$30 ASI members / $35 non-members. Includes one drink and all project materials.

Summer Slöjd Youth Handcraft Series
Wednesdays from 1 – 3 p.m.
Young makers (ages 7+) will use glass, wire and felt to create lovely and useful objects. Create together! Adults may register with their youthful companions. Continues Wednesdays through August 15.

$10 ASI members / $15 non-members.

Family Gallery Fun

Wednesdays from 1-3 p.m.
Join ASI staff in the Mansion’s 3rd floor Family Gallery for playtime and drop-in activities. All ages welcome; children must be accompanied by an adult. Included with museum admission.

Wednesdays from 5-7 p.m.
This drop-in gathering offers Swedish speakers a space to go over lessons, use language resources and, of course, prata svenska with an instructor and others. FREE. No need to register or be in an ASI class.

Kids at the Castle: Cabin Creatures
Friday, July 15, 9 – 10 a.m. and Saturday, July 16, 9 – 10 a.m.
ASI’s monthly morning play date looks at the animals we find around us – rascally raccoons, beavers, diving ducks. Includes story time, museum exploration and crafts. Only $8 for the whole family. No registration required. Put August 17 and 18 on your calendars for Kids at the Castle: Mini Makers.

Pippi Day Camp – only a few spots left!
Thursday, August 9, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Our favorite red-headed heroine inspires this day of adventure! Dress like Pippi or her friends. Bring a lunch and prepare to play inside or out. For grades 1-5.

Language & Culture Sommartider, hej, hej!

Afternoons at ASI: Allsång på Skansen
Wednesday, July 11, 1-2 p.m.
On Tuesday nights at Stockholm’s outdoor Skansen museum, 10,000-25,500 people gather to sing Swedish songs with musical guests. Come to ASI to learn some tunes and sing along! Included in museum admission.

Swedish Hiking Club
Take a skogsbad, break for fika and practice din svenska! (aka walk and talk Swedish.)

Sommarkurs 3

ASI featured on BBC’s Great American Railroad Journeys

BBC host Michael Portillo visited ASI to film part of an episode of Great American Railroad Journeys – “Minneapolis to St. Paul,” now airing locally for the first time on TPT2. After a chat with ASI CEO Bruce Karstadt, his diplomatic skills were tested at a lutfisk dinner prepared by ASI instructor Patrice Johnson, where he discovers the allure of reconstituted dried cod and is serenaded by ASI’s Spelmanslag.
