Exhibition, Launches with

November 11 Family Day!

Fest! Merry Mansion, ASI’s much-anticipated annual exhibition of decorated Nordic holiday rooms and a space honoring our Romanian guests, transforms the historic Turnblad Mansion. We kick off the Fest! on November 11 with Family Day, the first of a full slate of events running through January 7, including performances of Impossible Salt, Make Merry: Spirited Glögg tours, and our Julmarknad Christmas Market Dec. 2-3. Also opening is Skål! Scandinavian Spirits, a new nationally travelling exhibition produced by the Museum of Danish America, which explores the ‘spirited’ cultural drinking traditions shared by Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

Get on the Bus – All Saints Day: Tour Lakewood Cemetery
Saturday, Nov. 4, 4 – 6 p.m.

Join ASI on All Saints’ Day to honor Swan and Christina Turnblad and other notable Swedes. Travel by vintage city bus provided by the Minnesota Transportation Museum to Lakewood Cemetery for a walking tour to visit the grave sites of our founders and of singer/comedian Hjalmar Peterson (a.k.a. Olle i Skratthult) and Alfred Lind (established a Swedish community in Cuba). Light candles, leave flowers. Depart from ASI after a late-afternoon fika from Fika Café – coffee and pastries.

Tjärnblom-Starry-Eyed CD Release Concert

Wed., Nov. 8, 6:30 p.m.

Tjärnblom (“woodland lake flower”) is an eclectic Minneapolis group of folk musicians with Cheryl Paschke and Mary Crimi on nyckelharpa, Val Eng, on harmonium and Joe Alfano on strings and vocals. Join them in the Mansion ballroom to celebrate the launch of their new Starry-Eyed CD.

Included with Museum admission. FREE for ASI members and kids ages 5 and under.

Skål! Scandinavian Spirits
Exhibition Preview Tour with Aquavit & Appetizers
Friday, Nov. 10, 6:30 p.m.

Get a preview look and taste some aquavit with small bite pairings from FIKA at an exclusive pre-opening tour of this ‘spirited’ new national traveling exhibition. Created by the Museum of Danish America and presented by Aalborg and Linie Aquavits, the display shares the history and traditions of drinking culture in Sweden, Norway and Denmark, and how these customs were carried by immigrants to the U.S. On view through January 7, 2018.

Tour/Tasting: $45 ASI members / $55 non-members. Regular exhibition entrance included in ASI Museum admission.

Impossible Salt Returns to ASI with Performances of Wise One
November 11 – December 21

Musical storytellers Impossible Salt return to ASI by popular demand with Wise One, a new work. Drop in for community shows or attend exclusive ticketed performances.

Community Performances in the Ballroom. These events do not require advanced registration. Included in ASI Museum admission.

  • Wednesday, Nov. 15, 7 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Dec. 6, 7 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Dec. 13, 7 p.m. As part of Neighborhood Open House. Free Museum admission!
  • Thursday, Dec. 21, 7 p.m. As part of Winter Solstice.

Exclusive Ticketed Performances at 7 p.m. in the Grand Hall with pre-show cocktail, appetizers and Holiday Mansion exploration.

Tickets are $45. Please register online a week in advance.

Let’s Talk Turkey

Friday, Nov. 17 & Sat. Nov. 18, 9-10 a.m.

November’s Kids at the Castle highlights the Thanksgiving season with storytelling, music and movement during prime-time playtime before the museum opens to the public.

Suggested for ages 2-5. $8 per family.
No registration necessary.

Julglädje – “Christmas Joy” Performances

Sat. Nov. 25, noon & 2 p.m. Sun. Nov. 26, 1 p.m.

Be part of the story and the joy at this unique set of holiday performances hosted by musician Ross Sutter with Marya Hart on piano and Cheryl Paschke on nyckelharpa and fiddle. Rose Arrowsmith-Decoux invites the kids to become a part of a creative, adventurous and interactive story set to music.

$5 ASI adult member; $6 non-member adult; $3 kids 6-17 / FREE for kids under 6.

Eva Sabet, from the acclaimed Swedish Crown Bakery in Anoka, shares secrets of authentic Swedish holiday baking, including advice for making sju sorters kakor (Seven Types of Cookies). Sample the baked goods with coffee! $55 ASI members / $65 non-members

Nordic Table – Richard Tellström on Smörgåsbord and Snacks
Tuesday, Nov. 28, 6:30 p.m.

Richard Tellström, Swedish food historian-in-residence at ASI, shares Swedish traditions about starting a meal with a sandwich, or its variant, the sandwich cake, Swedish cookie customs, beverages in Swedish history, and the history of the smörgåsbord and Swedish fika. $10 ASI members / $15 non-members

Get Creative at ASI’s Nordic Craft Workshops

Nordic Crafts – Ceramic Beads and Pendants

Wednesday, Nov. 8 &
Nov. 15, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Create your own unique beads and pendants from clay during this two-session class. Your handiwork from the first round will be fired and ready for glazing during the second.

$45 ASI members, $55 non-members,
$5 materials fee payable to instructor Sue Flanders.

Nordic Crafts – Fused Glass Ornaments

Thursday, Nov. 9, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Use basic techniques to create two original fused glass ornaments. Learn how to safely cut and work with glass to craft beautiful ornaments to keep for your holiday celebration or to give as a gift. Projects will be fired in the ASI kiln and ready to be picked up two weeks after the class. $30 ASI members / $40 non-members.
